Parenting Tip

Won't people think I'm a bad parent if I go on a parenting course?

It's sad that, in Britain, we have a very dim view of parenting courses or workshops. In other countries, parenting classes are a standard part of antenatal care. Like learning to drive, their belief is that babies don't come with a guide book and there's no expectation a parent should magically 'know' what to do. So why are we so tough on ourselves?

A lot of parents fear being seen as 'a bad parent' if they are seen seeking advice. As an experienced children's services worker though, I can confidently say I have NEVER had a bad parent ask me for advice because a truly 'bad' parent wouldn't bother. I've only ever had good, caring parents who want to be even better come to my courses.

So, if you see a workshop advertised, help me change the unhelpful mindset that stops good parents from asking for help and sign up!

Special Visitors

We had some very special visitors to the school on Thursday. Three brothers who were former pupils of our school visited. I gave them a tour of the school, and we then looked at an old register where they found their names. It was a wonderful moment. I later received this lovely email from them.

'One again, on behalf of myself and my brothers Edward & Tim, I would like to thank you so much for giving up some time today to show us through our old school.

St John’s School holds many special memories for all three of us. It was our very first school and provided that solid foundation for our future education as well as memories and friendships we still hold dear to this day. I hope all your students realise what a special school they are beginning their education in, and how lucky they have to have such a supportive Headteacher and teaching staff.
