Message from the Headteacher

So at the end of our first full week we have lots to celebrate. The children have settled in well to new and old routines. We have started having assemblies in the hall together, after 18 months of being online and the children have been learning Harvest songs ready for our Harvest Festival next month. We have also been reminding ourselves of our school Christian values - love, perseverance and respect. The children have enjoyed sharing what and who they love.

We are very proud of the adults too especially Miss James our new Reception teacher who has filled the Rabbits room with her infectious smile.

Have a lovely weekend,

Kerry Devane

Reading at St John's

At St John's we teach Phonics and Literacy with the programme Read Write Inc. The training and support from Ruth Miskin Training, rated Outstanding by the Department for Education, ensure the programmes have the best chance of success in schools.
The  Read Write Inc. programmes are carefully matched to the curriculum, giving your children the best chance of success. They show teachers, teaching assistants and parents step-by-step how to teach all children to become fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.

On Monday the children in Year 1 and 2 will be meeting the children and adults in their phonics group. The children have been assessed and put in a group that best matches their ability. Phonics will be taught daily across the school. In Reception the children will be enjoying some sound discrimination and rhyme and rhythm activities to prepare them for learning letter sounds in the next few weeks.

It's really important that all children have their book bags and bring them to school every day. Children in Year 1 and 2 will be bringing home resources to support their reading at home. Please look after these resources and keep them in their book bags.
