Message from the Headteacher

 Dear Parents/Carers,

Happy New Year to you all. Despite the wet and gloomy weather, the children and staff have had a spring in their step and sunshine in their smiles.

After school clubs will commence next week, please look out for posts from teachers.

Please also find the time to fill in the survey that I posted about RWI today. Your voice matters.

I have sent a few letters home this week on behalf of the governors to children that have improved attendance in the Autumn term. Can you believe we also had 28 children who had 100% attendance. Our Persistent Absence figures have also improved. Last year 31% of our children's attendance had dropped below 90% this Autumn term it was 16%.  Thank you to all our families who are supportive of getting their children in school and on time. The winter months are a difficult time for illnesses. Despite this, you have worked hard to give your children the education they have a right to.

'Article 28 of the United Nations Children's Rights Convention says that children and young people have the right to education no matter who they are: regardless of race, gender or disability; if they’re in detention, or if they’re a refugee.'

Have a restful weekend.

Thank you for your support,

Kerry Devane

Can I please remind you that the parking space opposite the library entrance is not for public use and is reserved for the Vicar and Church wardens. Parking is also not permitted on the pavement alongside the library. Parking wardens have been issuing fines to cars parked on the pavement.

Similarly, in St Johns Carpark, please be respectful of the disabled spaces and avoid parking on the yellow lines or leaving engines running.

Tips for Parents

A common complaint I hear from parents is that they often have to ask their child multiple times, maybe even to the point of shouting, before their child cooperates.

Professor Matt Sanders, author of the Triple P programme suggests following these steps.

- Stop what you are doing and move to within an arm's length of your child.

- Bend down to their eye level, say their name and tell them EXACTLY what it is you want them to do.

- Wait for them to process that and respond - five seconds is enough (10 seconds for neuro diverse)

- If your child does as asked, praise them.

- If your child does not do as asked, repeat the request once more, then back it up with a logical consequence if you are ignored.

- Children respond better when parents act immediately, consistently and decisively, so don't ask five or six times!

Achievements

A huge well done to Florence in Otters class  for her wonderful ballet performance with the South West School of Dance. We are so proud of you!
