Message from the Headteacher

 Dear Parents/Carers,

Well, it certainly has got very festive at St Johns this week. Thank you to all the families and staff who helped or visited our Christmas fair last Friday, which was a great way to kickstart the festive season. We raised an amazing £729 which will go towards improving our outdoor spaces. We still need to count up the raffle money and raffle tickets are available until Wednesday from the school office.

This week, the Reception children put on a wonderful Nativity performance. It was made even more special as it was performed in our church. We visited Glastonbury Care home and sang Christmas songs and decorated a tree in the church for the 'Tree Festival'.

Next week is set to be just as festive with Music for Miniatures performing 'The Snowman' in the school hall on Tuesday. Please help pay for this by making a minimum contribution of £2 per child.

On Wednesday we have our Holy Thorn ceremony on the church grounds (families are welcome to join us) and class parties in the afternoon.

Finally, on Friday at 2pm we have our annual Christmas Carol concert at St John's church. You are welcome to take your children home after this performance, but please let them return to the classroom first.

I hope you have a peaceful weekend.

Thank you for your support,

Kerry Devane

Tips for Parents

Free online courses for parents

51% of parents say Christmas is a stressful time. Stress can lead to conflict, and with 13% of children in Somerset likely to live in families where parents struggle with unhealthy conflict, every little bit of help can make an impact over this Christmas period.

Unhealthy conflict between parents, whether living together or apart, can have a negative impact on the mental and physical health of both children and parents.

Any parent in Somerset can access new, free online courses at a time to suit them by going to:  www.oneplusone.org.uk/parents.

Me, You and Baby Too is for new parents who can struggle with tiredness and stress which can lead to misunderstandings. This course can help improve communication skills and manage conflict.

Arguing Better helps parents understand how to argue in a constructive way that can make all the difference in any relationship.

Getting it Right for Children is for separated/separating parents as it is easy for children to get caught in the middle of their disagreements. This is to help parents parent their children cooperatively after parting.

If you would like to know more about these courses please email strongerfamilies@somerset.gov.uk

Achievements

News from an ex-pupil

Rachel attended all 3 schools in Glastonbury, starting in St Johns in 1984, where she was the first girl pupil to cut the Holy thorn at Christmas.

She joined the Royal United Hospital in Bath in 2004 as a nurse, and is now a Sister in charge of the MAU

She has a husband and 2 children and has continued her studies. This year she has completed her masters degree in Advanced Nursing Practice, with a distinction.

We are very proud of you, Rachel, and thank you to your parents for sharing this wonderful news. Congratulations!
