My Classroom

At St Johns Infants School we believe that all children deserve an education rich in memorable experiences that allow the children's creativity and curiosity to grow, alongside the development of key skills and knowledge.

The children in our Reception Classes will transition into Key Stage 1 as well-rounded individuals who have gained the skills to continue being independent, resilient, inquisitive and ambitious.

Our Reception children are provided with high quality experiences to develop their skills and understanding. This is achieved through indoor and outdoor provision, purposefully planned activities and skilled professionals who put the children at the heart of everything.

The EYFS statutory framework does not prescribe a particular teaching approach.

“Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, relate to others, set their own goals and solve problems. Children learn by leading their own play, and by taking part in play which is guided by adults.” (EYFS Statutory Framework)

At St Johns Infants, the Reception team carefully plan what the children learn in the classroom. The provision in the classroom enables children to learn from their interests, alongside extending their knowledge and understanding through direct teaching.

We have two reception classrooms where the children can choose from a variety of learning activities. There are different areas where there is always something new for the children to explore and opportunities for their skills to progress. These include;

The Playdough factory,
Magic blocks area
The creation station
Numberblocks area
The writing station
I wonder area

We are very lucky to have a fantastic outdoor area where we encourage children to take their learning outside, children have the opportunity to ride bikes, build with large resources in the 'purple building area', make lots of mud pies in our brand-new mud kitchen area (coming soon). Children will also have the opportunity to play with water, sand and develop their confidence in trying new things both inside and outside the classroom.
